Cinderella and the Ancient Law: As Told by the Fairy Godmother - Part 2

Post by b7ffh »

Lady Arabella's eyes scanned the yellowed parchment, her voice trembling with excitement as she read the full text of the ancient law aloud to her sister, using the formal legal language of the time:
Be it hereby decreed, for the preservation of the royal lineage and the welfare of the kingdom, that any common-born woman betrothed to marry the prince shall be subjected to an examination prior to the union. This examination shall be conducted by the royal physician, who shall assess the bride's overall health, her purity, and her capacity to bear children in service of the realm.

The bride shall be required to disrobe completely, her body bared for the scrutiny of the physician, with no covering or concealment of any kind permitted. This examination shall be witnessed by His Majesty the King, His Royal Highness the Prince, and other high officials of the court, who shall observe the proceedings without any obstruction to their view, in order to confirm the suitability of the match.

However, let it be known that this decree shall not apply to women of noble birth, whose lineage and virtue have been established by their noble status.
As Lady Arabella finished reading these words, she looked up at her sister with a triumphant smile, certain that this law would prove to be Cinderella's undoing. What they could not yet foresee was the resilience, courage, and determination that would guide our heroine as she faced this daunting challenge and fought to protect her love and her future.

As Lady Arabella and Lady Beatrice reveled in their sinister discovery, they could not help but imagine how the modest Cinderella would react when faced with the humiliating ordeal outlined in the ancient law. They pictured her, standing before the King and the Prince, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment, her eyes filled with tears as she learned of the degrading examination she must endure.

In their wicked minds, they saw Cinderella's delicate heart shattering under the weight of this revelation, her love for the Prince not enough to make her withstand such a trial. The sisters gleefully imagined that she would surely choose to withdraw from the marriage rather than subject herself to such indignity.

"Oh, sister," Lady Arabella sneered, "just think of how her heart will break when she realizes that her love for the Prince comes with such a terrible price. Surely, her modesty will prevent her from enduring this ordeal, and she will withdraw from the marriage, leaving the Prince heartbroken and free for one of us to claim."

Lady Beatrice nodded in agreement, her eyes gleaming with malicious delight. "Indeed, Arabella. The very thought of her standing before the royal court, exposed and vulnerable, must be unbearable to her. She will have no choice but to flee, her dream of becoming a queen forever shattered."

However, the sisters had underestimated the depth of Cinderella's love and the strength of her spirit. They could not foresee the courage and determination that would guide her through this daunting challenge, as she fought to protect her love and her future with the Prince. For in the face of adversity, our heroine would prove that love can triumph even over the darkest schemes and seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Lord Edmund was a distinguished figure in the kingdom, a man of immense power and influence. As the head of one of the oldest and most powerful families in the realm, his name commanded respect and admiration from all who knew him. With a tall, broad-shouldered frame, and a rugged handsomeness that had only grown more striking with age, his mere presence was enough to command attention.

A man of unimpeachable character, Lord Edmund was revered for his integrity and honesty. He was known to speak his mind, regardless of the consequences, and his word was considered as good as gold. His loyalty to the crown was unwavering, yet he was also a staunch traditionalist, holding firmly to the customs and values that had shaped the kingdom for centuries.

While Lord Edmund bore no personal animosity towards Cinderella, he harbored concerns about her humble origins and her ability to fulfill the demanding role of a queen. In his eyes, the traditions and customs that had preserved the nobility's stature for generations were being threatened by this unlikely union.

It was this conviction that made him the perfect person for Lady Arabella and Lady Beatrice to approach with their sinister discovery. They believed that his unimpeachable character and traditionalist stance would lend credibility to their plot, drawing the attention of the King and the court to the long-forgotten law.

Little did Lord Edmund know that his involvement in the sisters' scheme would propel Cinderella into a challenge that would test the limits of her love, strength, and determination. As the story unfolded, he would come to witness firsthand the true measure of Cinderella's character, and perhaps even learn that the qualities of a queen could be found in the most unexpected of places.

Lady Arabella and Lady Beatrice, well aware of Lord Edmund's traditionalist beliefs and respect for the kingdom's customs, decided to approach him with their sinister discovery. Concealing their true motives behind a facade of concern for the kingdom and a deep love for tradition, they requested a private audience with the esteemed lord.

Upon being granted the meeting, the sisters entered Lord Edmund's study with an air of solemnity, their faces etched with feigned concern. Lady Arabella, her voice trembling with false emotion, began to speak. "My dear Lord Edmund, we come to you with a matter of great importance, one that affects not only the future of our beloved kingdom but also the sanctity of our noble traditions."

With a nod from Lady Arabella, Lady Beatrice carefully unrolled the parchment containing the ancient law, her hands shaking with a mix of excitement and nervousness. As Lord Edmund read the text, his brows furrowed, the implications of the decree slowly dawning on him.

Recognizing Lord Edmund's growing unease, the sisters seized the opportunity to further undermine Cinderella's reputation. They began to make slanderous insinuations about her chastity, casting doubt on her purity and suitability to become the queen.

"Oh, Lord Edmund," Lady Arabella sighed, "it pains us to say this, but who knows what a common girl like Cinderella might have done before she caught the prince's eye? Can we truly trust her to be a virtuous and honorable queen?"

Lady Beatrice chimed in, her voice dripping with false concern. "Indeed, sister. We have nothing against Cinderella personally, but our kingdom's future is at stake. We must consider the possibility that she may not be the paragon of virtue she claims to be."

As the sisters continued their deceitful charade, they watched Lord Edmund closely, waiting to see if their words had swayed him. For their plan to succeed, they needed the support of this powerful and respected man, whose unimpeachable character and traditionalist beliefs would lend credibility to their sinister plot. Little did they know that the events they had set in motion would reveal the true strength and courage of the woman they sought to destroy.

Upon hearing the sisters' words and considering the potential implications of the ancient law, Lord Edmund felt a sense of duty to bring the matter to the attention of the highest authorities in the kingdom. He stood abruptly, his voice firm and resolute as he declared, "Very well. I shall schedule a meeting at once with the King, the Prince, and the Grand Duke. Such a matter cannot be ignored, and it is in the best interests of the kingdom that we discuss this law thoroughly."

Lady Arabella and Lady Beatrice exchanged surreptitious glances, their wicked plan seemingly falling into place. However, they knew that they needed to ensure that Cinderella would be present at the meeting, as they hoped to see her crumble under the weight of the law's requirements. Lady Beatrice, her voice laden with feigned concern for fairness, spoke up.

"Lord Edmund, might we suggest that Cinderella herself be present at the meeting? After all, the law concerns her directly, and it would only be fair for her to hear the discussion and share her thoughts."

Lord Edmund, his sense of honor and justice prevailing, nodded in agreement. "Yes, you are right, Lady Beatrice. It is only fitting that Cinderella be present when we address this matter."

As the sisters left the meeting with Lord Edmund, they could barely contain their excitement. They believed that with Cinderella present at the meeting, she would be unable to bear the humiliation of the law's demands and would withdraw from the marriage on the spot, leaving the Prince heartbroken and available to be claimed by one of them.

Little did they know that their malicious plan would only serve to reveal the true strength and resilience of Cinderella, as she faced this challenge head-on, determined to protect her love and her future, even in the face of such adversity.
