Donna, if you want to display an image in your post, you can either upload an attachment (see Attachments tab), or point to an image in www.

For the latter, type open bracket img close bracket followed by the images URL, e.g. http://myhost.mydomain.com/myimage.jpg
You can also use the "Insert image" toolbar button, it looks like a landscape painting.

You had the right idea, but gyfcat seems to convert gifs to mp4 (video) format. You can still get the gif by clicking the paper plane and download gif, it will give a link to copy. it does need to be directly linked to the image with image extension.

I believe small mp4 files can be uploaded as attachments

OK, if it's a pic on your computer you can just drag and drop. If it's a pic you found online, use the img tags with the address between them.
